Not This Month!

'I will read 12 books this month, attend 7 seminars, and participate in 5 webinars. I will start working out every morning…' 😏

Sounds familiar?

I understand the urge to create a long, ambitious list of goals at the start of every month, full of enthusiasm, hope, and that fresh start feeling. It's exciting, even empowering.

However, what often happens is that you become overwhelmed. You don’t follow through. And by the end of the month, you’re disappointed in yourself for not ticking everything off the list.

The truth is, most of those goals? They were unrealistic to begin with.

So, what if this month, instead of sprinting toward too many things at once, you took a more intentional approach?

What if you looked back at the past few months, reflected on what didn’t get done, and simply focused on those?

Let's make this month different.

Here are five practical strategies to help you set more intentional goals and achieve them effectively. (Pay close attention to number 5; it’s essential.)

1. Set Clear and Concise Goals

Avoid going overboard. Don’t aim for 12 books when you haven’t read one in the last two months. Start small. Start realistic.

For example: Commit to reading one book this month. That's it. It's clear. It's doable.

2. Write It Down

Yes, grab a pen or open your notes app. Writing down your goals reinforces them in your memory and keeps them top of mind. You’re subconsciously reminding yourself, 'Hey, you've got work to do!' Mental notes can be slippery. Put it in writing.

3. Create a Plan

It's not enough to set a goal. You need a clear roadmap. Let's say your goal is to read a 240-page book. Set aside 30 minutes each day to read 10 pages. Stick with that rhythm, and you'll be done by the 24th. Doesn’t that feel manageable?

4. Reward Yourself

Big or small, celebrate your progress!

Finished that book? Go on a solo date, buy yourself something nice, or treat yourself to a cup of yogurt.

Create a system that makes you look forward to reaching those milestones.

5. Be Accountable

Don’t keep your goals locked in your head. Share them.

Tell a friend. Post an update. Or keep a journal.

Track what you’ve achieved, note your challenges, and write down how you plan to overcome them moving forward.

Accountability adds power to your progress.

This month, don’t aim to do everything. Aim to do something well.

Here’s to thoughtful goals, intentional action, and genuine progress.

Happy New Month, dear reader!
